Writing Understanding pain

Do I need to see a doctor before starting mind-body work?

Yes, I recommend having a doctor rule out serious medical causes first. Knowing nothing dangerous is going on in your body makes it much easier to trust mind-body work and go deeper with it.

Why being checked helps the work

If part of you is still wondering whether something dangerous is being missed, your nervous system stays on alert, and that keeps the alarm going. Hearing that nothing serious was found lets you put that worry down. It gives your body permission to start feeling safe, and that's where this work begins.

What if doctors have dismissed me?

A lot of the people who come to me have been told nothing is wrong, or that their pain is permanent and they'll just have to live with it. Some have been doubted for years.

Being cleared by a doctor and being dismissed by one can happen in the same appointment. You can take the useful part, that nothing dangerous was found, and leave the rest.

If you're nervous about going back, it can help to write down your symptoms beforehand, bring someone you trust, or simply ask: "Is there anything dangerous here that I need to know about?" That question gets you the answer you actually need.

I've chosen not to get medically checked. Can I still do this work?

That choice is yours to make. I can only share my recommendation, and you're welcome to start this work wherever you are.

Mind-body work doesn't have any contraindications. Some breathing practices aren't right for everyone, for example during pregnancy or with epilepsy or a heart condition. So we'll talk about your health at the start, and I'll adapt the practices to you.

And whatever you decide, please get emergency care right away if you ever notice numbness in your groin, loss of bladder or bowel control, or weakness in your legs that is quickly getting worse.

What I am and what I'm not

I'm a breathwork therapist and mind-body practitioner, trained in the SarnoXSachs Chronic Pain Practitioner Training and Inspire Breathwork. I help people understand their pain and feel safe in their bodies again. I don't diagnose, I don't give medical advice, and I don't replace your doctor.

With love,
Leyla

What if all my tests are normal?

That's very common with mind-body pain. Normal tests don't mean the pain is imagined. They mean the cause is probably not structural damage.

Can I do this alongside medical treatment?

Yes. Many people do both, and there's no need to stop any treatment to start this work.

Do I need an MRI or scan first?

Not always. For most back pain without warning signs, doctors often don't recommend a scan right away. Your doctor can tell you whether one makes sense for you.
